The Project – Overview
’ A four person inclusive

crossing Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia, driving 4662 miles
in a specifically equipped Land Rover 110. The object
was to visit disability projects supported by IMPACT
in Mwea, Kibwezi and Arusha, and conservation projects
at Save the Elephants, Kenya and the Chimfunshi wildlife
orphanage in Zambia. During the six week journey the
online journal provided feedback, diary, expedition
information and links to organisations visited. The
findings were collated into a 45 minutes multi-media
presentation and as a web based information resources.
‘
Background
This breakthrough project has been
made possible by the support of the Winston
Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowship. The concept
for the project has been generated by Al Moncrieff-Smith,
a wheelchair user who has been actively promoting inclusive
travel and adventure since breaking his neck ( c4/5
complete ) in a sporting accident in 1990 at the
age of 21. Al has planned the project from inspiration
to reality choosing his team and developing partnerships
in order to educate and inform people about the possibilities
available to disabled people.
The main aim was ‘..by
learning first hand about the sustainable conservation
and disability projects we will be able to bring our
experiences back to the United Kingdom to raise awareness
of and encourage support for these projects.’
