Day 8 Wednesday 4th September
Farewell to Save the Elephants and on to Mwea.
Long Journey and Late Arrival
Packing always takes longer than you think! A bumpy descent and
change of focus as we crossed through district boundaries, driving
through a range of climatic conditions towards a base for the first
of the IMPACT projects we plan to visit.
Day 9 Thursday 5th September
Mwea Mission Hospital.
Experiencing a Moment of Village Life
A guided tour by 'Faith', one of the Mission Sisters, who took us
to a local village Kiamanyeki to learn more from the people themselves.
We were fortunate to be introduced to the Village Health worker
who in turn helped to translate our desire to learn more of village
life. During our visit a young girl stepped forward and said to
me "I will never forget the day that you came to our village
for the rest of my life". On reflection I feel that this is
the first time that I really arrived in Africa. I felt as though
I had received a lesson in humanity, which I will carry with me.
Day 10 Friday 6th September
Mwea to Nairobi via the Eastern Sloes of Mount Kenya.
Long Goodbyes Become Farwell
On to Nairobi for vehicle repairs. Our long travel time and familiarity
with our vehicle led us to the conclusion that all was not well
- the purr of the engine seemed to be punctuated by a number of
erratic clunks. With the assistance of our guide Watson the conclusion
was to return to Nairobi for immediate action.
Day 11 Saturday 7th September
Nairobi Vehicle Repairs and Route Planning.
Enforced Frustration in Nairobi
As the rain fell a series of repairs were undertaken; a new tyre,
fan belt and universal joint were all replaced under Watson's watchful
eye. We were invited to share a meal with Watson's family at a Bomas
(Swahili for family), we were able to enjoy a meal with local people
from Nairobi and sample Nyama choma (Swahili for roast meat). A
chance for the team to relax and enjoy a few drinks and wonderful
company.
Day 12 Sunday 8th September
Organization and Relaxation
Missing Family and Friends
Still in Nairobi awaiting the final vehicle repair scheduled for
early Monday morning; a great opportunity to make calls to UK, E-mail
and for Suresh a chance to meet with cousins he had not seen for
many years.
Day 13 Monday 9th September
Nairobi-Kibwezi Visit 2nd Impact Project
A Moment to Remember, Observing a
Community in Action.
Following a three hour drive South East from Nairobi we arrived
in the quiet town of Kibwezi, to meet Mary, Sister in charge. We
were introduced to Mr Nguti and scheduled to accompany him on a
routine visit the next day.
Day 14 Tuesday 10th September
The Community Project at Mwatua Health Clinic
Observing Great Work with Minimal
Resources.
Travelling through small but vibrant villages, stopping only to
collect the old car battery to power the ophthalmoscope we arrived
at the clinic where Mr Nguti has been treating patients since 1989.
We were able to observe his skill and compassion as we talked to
his scheduled patients. A dash to Nairobi to briefly meet with Dr
Rupani before driving North West through the Rift valley to camp
at Lake Naivasha.
