Al Moncrieff-Smith, Terena Bailey,
Suresh Paul and Matt Boddy have great pleasure in
inviting you to an illustrated talk to celebrate their return from
Africa.
Wheelchair adventures in Africa: The rough cut
on
Wednesday, October 30th, 2002
Drinks and canapes: 7-9pm (presentation: 7.30pm)
at
The Royal Geographical Society ( with IBG),
I Kensington Gore, London SW7 2AR
Ticket: £20 per person.
Paralysed in a sporting accident aged 21, Al Moncrieff-Smith feared
his travelling days were over. Twelve years on,he has once more
proven that, to achieve the possible, you must attempt the
impossible,
successfully crossing Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia in a Land Rover
110, together with able-bodied team mates,
Matt Boddy, Suresh Paul and Terena Bailey.
The expedition set out to promote inclusive adventure travel, disability
awareness and conservation in Africa
and the UK, and became much more.
An excerpt from their diary reads: Day 9 - Mwea Mission Hospital:
....During our visit a young girl stepped
forward and said to me "I will never forget the day that you
came to our village for the rest of my life". On
reflection I feel that this is the first time that I arrived in
Africa. I feel like I have received a lesson in humanity,
which I will always carry with me.
Fresh from Africa, this will be the first chance to hear from this
inspiring team - about their personal voyages of
discovery, the extraordinary people and places they encountered,
and the highs and lows of wheelchair travel.
Wheel the World Project Africa 2002 has been made possible through
the generosity of the Winston Churchill
Memorial Trust Fellowship with the support of the Inclusive Expedition
Unit of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG).
In the last eight years, Wheel the World teams have
crossed more than ten countries in four continents, raising
money for social and environmental projects.
